Welcome To Watercolor

Double Session Online Workshop with
Watercolor Art Society Houston

January 6 & 7, 2024, 1:30 - 5:30pm (CST)

I am told often in conversation that watercolor is an intimidating medium! It was my “first love” as a painter, but I understand the sentiment, having plenty of experience with other mediums to compare it to. But the aspects of watercolor that seem challenging are also what makes it most beautiful and unique. The important considerations, I find, are knowing when, and when not to control the paint. So, if we work loosely, a willingness to allow the paint some freedom under your guidance and care is essential. It comes down to attitude. With a few rules committed to memory, and a strong sense of adventure, you can achieve a lot!

Links to a video recording of each session will be provided, should you miss a class or want to review a session. Links remain available for 120 days.

A final written critique is offered through Padlet following the completion of the workshop.

The Watercolour
Portrait from Life

10 Session In-Person Workshop With
The Edinburgh Drawing School

Tuesdays January 16 - March 26 (except Feb 13) 2024, 19:00 - 21:00 (GMT)

Watercolour is a “moving” medium. We can be proficient by making good decisions, both in anticipation of a desired effect, and then in response to what happens when pigment is applied. Designing the portrait, while maintaining the joys and characters of this particular medium seems a daunting task. But having a constructive, step by step method will lead you through milestones that build a proper form and likeness in a very approachable way.

Watercolor — Lively Animals

Double Session Online Workshop with
Watercolor Art Society Houston

January 27 & 28, 2024, 1:30 - 5:30 pm (CST)

The sky is the limit when it comes to painting animals! Few subjects offer the variety and dynamics that are possible with a lovely beast and the environment in which they are found. If you want to paint an otter, you will likely learn how to paint the appearance of flowing water and wet fur. If you want to paint a bird in the sky, you will also learn how to paint clouds and the gesture of flight. It’s a perfect blend of personality and the elements coming together. In this two-session workshop, Jason will lead you through the completion of two animal paintings - please see below for references supplied by the artist. Before starting each painting on a separate study sheet, we will practice the unique gesture drawing, brush techniques, and color mixes appropriate to capture the most character of each. Then we will apply our preparations to make the final beautiful painting. And with the applications learned here, there’s no doubt you can go and continue to paint what more you love!

Watercolor — Likeness
& Character

Double Session Online Workshop with
Watercolor Art Society Houston

February 24 & 25, 2024, 1:30 - 5:30 pm (CST)

Such a lovely feeling when we paint a portrait and nail the likeness! It’s so gratifying to capture the soul and energy of a person, especially if that soul and energy is that of a loved one. But can it seem like a stroke of luck if we achieve it? We arrive at a great likeness differently than you may think. In this workshop, Jason will guide you on how and what to look for in the early stages that make the most impact. Then work to add any details that support, not distract from the overall effect.
