I’m an American contemporary realist artist and teacher living in Scotland and recent graduate from the Ayrshire Atelier of Fine Art. I currently maintain a studio in the Merchant City area of Glasgow with devotion to academic methods in portraiture, figurative work, and landscapes.

Two important words, process and clarity. As a person who prefers straightforwardness in my own studies and pursuits, I work to design a learning language that makes sense for my students. I teach how to develop an instinct and selective eye for constructing form in stages inspired by the methods of my alum and the Florence Academy of Art.

Per your institutions preference, each subject can begin as a 2-3hr demonstration, or expanded for a comprehensive major workshop, including material education and personal guidance.

Workshop Proposals

Constructing The Portrait in Drawing

In this five day intensive drawing workshop, we will focus on stages of constructing the drawn portrait from initial gestural marks, to an expressive fully rendered portrait.

Recognize proportions and gesture, implement diversity and characteristics of line, and how to think sculpturally.

the most important beginning marks that get you started on building a successful portrait. No matter your style, or how far you intend to develop your drawing, a solid and clear foundation for which it is all set greatly increases confidence and reduces frustration through the process. Thinking as simply as possible while using propper gestural angles and line language will minimize the complexity of information we see in a live sitter. And through a series of clear stages, a lovely portrait emerges! Whether you are a beginner, or an experienced artist, this course will introduce a new and efficient way of thinking about the information we see.

Constructing The Portrait in Oils

Discussing the development of painting in stages and significance of associated materials. Hybrid of Indirect and Direct (Alla Prima).

As you need, we will discuss theory and materials in great depth, preparing you to embrace the subject and medium of your choice with confidence. All levels of experience are welcome.

Preparations

All needed materials for demonstration will be supplied by me. And I’ll make a concise and economic list of materials to prepare students for major workshops.
